In Southern California there are a ton of different supermarkets you can go to. I've been to a Mexican one, a Vietnamese one, a Korean one, a Japanese one, an Indian/Middle Eastern one and a Russian one. All of them were great. I got to try something new and change up my food for that week.
This time I will talk a bit about the Japanese market.
The place is called "Mitsuwa." If you want to cook a Japanese dish but have no clue where to get sushi rice or okonomiyake flour, then Mitsuwa is where you need to go.
There are a few of them around SoCal. Some are larger and have more items, while others are smaller and don't have as many options, but still enough for you to choose from.
The one I went to was huge! It had a giant food court, lots of mini shops for sweets/icecream/snacks, a book store, a make-up store, a hair salon and a few gift shops.
See, plenty to choose from!
This time I went there for the food court and the sweets. Next time I am there for groceries, I'll try to take some photos of the items you can find there.
Here come the few photos I managed to take:
The grocery part
The foodcourt part
I got beef soba with some fried chicken and tempura. It all cost less than 10$ and was very filling.
The main reason I came. This Mitsuwa sells Mochido: a donut shaped mochi with glaze.
We got a coffee late mochido and sakura mochi
We also got a matcha/green tea and raspberry mochido.
These things were so yummy! I highly recommend them. :)
Check out your local ethnic markets. They tend to have really yummy and pretty cheap food that you can try. And the best part is that for at least that week (if you buy groceries for the week) you get to eat something new.
Enjoy!
